About House Tech
Are you looking to build a home that outperforms the standard? Are you interested in high-performance principles or Passive Haus but don't know where to start? We are your first step. Whether it’s connecting you with an architect or builder, performance modeling of an existing design, or designing a Heating environment management system for your entire home, We are here to save you time, integrate services into your design, build connections and make it look good too.
Lets pull your ideas together and get you in front of the team to make it happen.
What does building smarter actually mean? It's not about filling your house with complicated products, it’s about how the design of your home can improve your living environment. Some small changes can mean a big difference.

Complete Package - Design to Delivery

Constantly we see homes with multiple systems working against each other. Too many Apps, too complicated. We build a system where all you your appliances work together wether it is a Radiator or Underfloor. Working alongside key suppliers and specialist trades, We built a complete whole-home solution using water as the primary medium for transferring energy. This is not new technology, but the control is. Once hot and cold water is generated, it can be distributed across multiple systems within the home including: - Domestic hot water - Radiant floor heating cooling - Ducted air systems via fan coils - Radiant ceiling panels - Radiators - Pool and Spa heating. These systems can be powered by a single heat pump or a bank of units, depending on the size and demand of the home. Over four years of delivering these solutions, the technology has continued to evolve—particularly with the introduction of more environmentally friendly refrigerants, allowing for higher temperatures and improved efficiencies. The key to these systems is integration. Each component is designed to work together as part of a single system, rather than operating independently and competing for performance. Water also provides a significant advantage as an energy transfer medium, allowing energy to be moved more efficiently and over greater distances than traditional refrigerant-based systems. My role begins at early-stage collaboration with clients and architects through to delivery, ensuring these systems are designed into the home from the outset. This includes coordinating layouts to maintain clean architectural outcomes, avoiding unnecessary bulkheads, and designing plant rooms in 3D to resolve complexity before construction begins. Drawing on my construction experience, I am able to influence structural design to create service shafts, and penetrations—to ensure systems could be installed efficiently and without compromise. The more that is resolved early, the smoother the construction process, reducing on-site issues and delivering a better overall outcome. By combining high-performance balanced ventilation with hydronic heating and cooling, this approach creates a complete indoor environmental system—managing both temperature and moisture to deliver year-round comfort.
E2 Building Envelope Design
NZ and Euro Windows
Design services
For over five years, I have specialised in detailing European and NZ window systems within the building envelope in locations all over New Zealand I collaborate with architects during the detailed design stage, helping shape both the aesthetic and performance outcomes to meet the expectations of the client and design team. There is no single approach to window installation. Each solution must consider performance requirements and the specific composition of the window system. With aluminium, careful attention is required around thermal breaks and frame positioning. Timber and uPVC systems offer greater flexibility, allowing more freedom in how the frame integrates within the building envelope. Throughout the process, I assist in designing the three critical layers: airtightness, weathertightness, and the external façade. Flashing design remains a key focus in the industry, particularly with recessed windows. My approach balances clean visual outcomes with robust, practical detailing to ensure long-term performance.

Solar Integration
Solar Power, a phrase on the minds of many in recent months. This is the first question I get asked once we start down the journey of home systems design. During the process, we will discuss different ways of storing energy, not just in batteries alone. The heat pumps we use have direct inputs for solar with smart ways of managing free power. Some heat pumps have weather forecast capabilities as well as direct outdoor environment monitoring. Solar needs to be considered at conception if you are to optimize the performance of the panels, which is all part of the whole home solution.

What is High Performance?
A high-performance home—often referred to as Passive House—is a design approach focused on creating a healthier indoor environment while significantly reducing the energy required for heating and cooling. When executed correctly, these homes deliver consistent temperatures throughout, improved air quality, and controlled humidity—resulting in a noticeably more comfortable living environment. This performance is achieved through a combination of key principles working together as a system. These typically include higher levels of insulation, high-performance glazing with controlled solar gain, and a strong focus on airtight construction. Airtightness is a critical component, allowing the internal environment to be properly controlled. It is achieved through carefully detailed construction methods, such as internal airtight membranes or alternative systems like SIP panels, and is tested during the build to ensure performance. Passive House targets an airtightness of 0.6 air changes per hour at 50 Pascals—approximately ten times tighter than a typical New Zealand home. Building form also plays an important role. Simpler, more considered designs reduce thermal bridging and eliminate areas where air movement becomes inefficient, improving overall performance. Ventilation is managed through a balanced mechanical system (MVHR), which introduces filtered fresh air into living spaces while extracting stale air from kitchens, bathrooms, and laundries. Heat is recovered through this process, maintaining efficiency while ensuring a constant supply of clean air. While the principles originate in Europe, they require adaptation for New Zealand conditions. Our homes often feature larger openings and stronger connections to outdoor spaces, requiring a more flexible and considered approach to design.

Architect Connection
Looking to build a high-performance home but not sure where to start? Choosing the right architect is one of the most important decisions in the process. It’s not just about design style—it’s about alignment, communication, and a shared understanding of how you want your home to perform. Over the years, I’ve worked closely with a range of architects, each with their own design language, technical strengths, and approach to the building envelope. Some prioritise form, others performance—but the best outcomes come when both are considered together. I help bridge that gap. By understanding your goals—whether it’s a Passive House, a high-performance home, or a refined architectural build—I can connect you with the right architect for your project. The right fit from the start creates a smoother process, better detailing, and ultimately a home that performs as well as it looks.

Hi, I'm Mike.
I have helped many people achieve their journey to higher performing homes over my years in Construction, it is those clients who have pushed me to start House Tech, to bring my knowledge in this space to a greater audience.
I started my career and the design space and have been working in Construction as an LBP builder for 15 years, five years within the high-performance building space delivering the above services .
I have had a unique opportunity to be involved with two grand designs projects, two gold medal projects, and 5 certified Passive homes, also helping many others realize their goal of a higher performing home no matter the budget.
If high performance isn't your goal that is fine too, we can still set you up with a great heating, cooling and ventilation system tailored to your build.
I have a passion for construction and look forward to helping you with your next project.
